This March the Hungarian Contemporary Architecture Center (KÉK) is organizing the 6th Budapest Architecture Film Days. This edition opens a whole new chapter in the life of the festival: our four day event has received a lot stronger professional support than before and is being accompanied by a growing international attention. We have participated at the most important architecture film festivals for the past couple of years, and organized screenings from Paris to Vienna, Brno, Warsaw, Krakow and Kiev. This year’s Call for entries attracted more than a hundred films from all around the globe. We will present the best of them between 6-9. March in Budapest.

Az üres ingatlanok átmeneti használatának nélkülözhetetlen elemei az olcsón használatba vehető, egyszerű eszközökkel egyedivé alakítható, könnyen átalakítható vagy akár költöztethető, rugalmas terek. Az esemény egy városi sétán, előadásokon és workshopokon keresztül mutatja be, miként alakíthatóak ki meglévő anyagokra és korlátozott erőforrásokra építve olyan terek, amelyek támogatják az átmeneti időszakra történő berendezkedést, a különböző tevékenységek együttélését. Nyilvános esemény a Nyugati Pályaudvar melletti terület átmeneti hasznosításáról
A Nyugati pályaudvar, Podmaniczky utca és Ferdinánd híd által határolt terület és a rajta található épületek évek óta állnak kihasználatlanul. A hosszútávú fejlesztések elindításáig tartó átmeneti időszak lehetőséget adhat a területben rejlő adottságok megismerésére és közösségi, helyi értékteremtésre. Az eseményen megismerhetjük a terület átmeneti hasznosításában érdekelt szereplők elképzeléseit és lehetőség nyílik a nyilvános, közösségi ötletelésre, az ötletek megvitatására is: Milyen funkciókat látnánk szívesen a tervezett szabadidős parkban? Milyen lehetőségek és rizikók rejlenek a terület átmeneti hasznosításában? Miként nevezzük az eddig névtelen területet? Részletek itt.

Az Adaptív város című kiállítás bevezetőt nyújt a köztes használat logikájába, bemutatva az üres ingatlanok ideiglenes hasznosításának alapvető kérdéseit, szervezeti, gazdasági, jogi és építészeti feltételeit, példákkal és esettanulmányokkal illusztrálva mind az alulról induló kezdeményezések dilemmáit, mind az önkormányzati és tulajdonosi szerepvállalás lehetőségeit.

“My Place, Their Place, Our Place. Education and Difference in Urban Research”
International January Symposium

The Interdisciplinary Centre for Urban Culture and Public Space is organising the “International January Symposium 2014” between 21st and 23rd of January, with Inputs from Sophie Watson, Jeff Hou, Ali Madanipour, Aglaée Degros und Sabine Knierbein. The Symposium combines students presentations (CROSSover), scientific inputs (INTERaction) and transdisciplinary workshops (TRANSformation), which are prepared jointly with colleagues from the City of Vienna, artists and activists. The opening of the Symposium, the book launch takes place on the 21st of January at WUK: ‘Madanipour/Knierbein/Degros (2014) Public space and the challenges of urban transformation in Europe. New York/London: Routledge.’ The following events the symposium will take place in the ‘Mobile Stadtlabor’ at Resselpark in front of Vienna UT’s main building.

A proposal for the 2014 Venice Architecture Biennial’s Hungarian Pavilion
with Dániel Kovács, Ádám Albert and Gergely Kukucska

Joining Rem Koolhaas’s concept of „a Biennial not about architects, but about architecture,” but turning around his call, our proposal is an inquiry into the conflict-ridden memories of modernism. In response to the Biennial’s theme „Absorbed Modernity”, the „Dismissed Modernity” project demonstrates how the reception of post-war modern architecture in Central and Easter Europe fades into the memory of the state-socialism; how it becomes subject to refusal, defunction, oblivion, domestication, rediscovery or protection; why certain buildings cannot adapt to the changing political circumstances, how they turn into stigmatized objects, or due to technological reasons, how they can no longer meet today’s standards. Based on these questions, the exhibition highlights the various relationships to the built environment, architecture and object culture of post-war modernism.

The materials presented at the exhibition are selected with a strong focus on Hungary, but considering the whole region’s architectural discourses, extending also to the peripheries of architectural thinking, in art, film and photography. The exhibition is conceived as a succession of sequences, using the Hungarian Pavilion’s spaces accordingly.

An URBACT Pilot Transfer Network

In partnership with the municipalities of Rome, Bremen and Alba Iulia

Temporary use is a planning tool effectively bringing together various stakeholders: it engages an important number of municipal and private economic development agencies and property owners, as well as cultural organisations, to elaborate potential uses of existing infrastructure and resources. In the meanwhile, architects (and landscape architects, designers) also play a key role in the development of models for interim use and in the establishment of temporary spatial possibilities. Transforming empty properties to allow them adopt new uses offers advantages to all: owners profit with the renovation and preservation of the building, users access affordable work and living spaces, residents enjoy their revitalised neighbourhoods, merchants benefit increasing traffic and sales, and the design professions gain new work opportunities and expanded professional perspectives. The objective of the TUTUR project is to introduce the method of temporary use in urban regeneration to cities participating in the network.
