PATTERNS_Lectures course – Fragmented Space: The Transformation of Central European Cities

PATTERNS_Lectures course – Fragmented Space: The Transformation of Central European Cities

Implemented in the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design and at the Budapest Un

The course aims to give students an insight into the tendencies and processes of Central European urban development. By juxtaposing definitions and perspectives on Central European cities with those on Post-Socialist and Balkan cities, the course will combine a variety of approaches to cities of the region. Encountering not only similar development paths but also the way ideas and solutions travel, as well as differences in urban development, students will develop a sense of regional characteristics, by understanding the logics and dynamics of the spatial framework of their everyday life and culture.

Each occasion (2 x 90 mins weekly) will focus on specific urban phenomena (such as population change, housing typologies, public spaces, informal urbanism, memory politics, social movements, cultural developments, new architectures, new cityscapes and representations) by reading texts and watching videos related both pre-1989 and post-1989 urban situations, and by offering a picture in close-up of certain cities, such as Prague, Belgrade, Bratislava, Tirana, Budapest, Zagreb, Vienna, Warsaw, Sofia and Berlin.
