Az elmúlt évtizedben nem csak a társadalomtudományok, a kommunikáció-kutatás és a vizuális kultúra-kutatás, de a kortárs művészet és a design érdeklődése is jelentős mértékben a nagyváros konfliktusai és lehetőségei, az épített környezet és a városban zajló társadalmi élet kölcsönhatásának kérdései felé fordult. A kortárs városkutatás sajátos területe a poszt-szocialista városok kutatása, amely, bár a közép- és kelet-európai régió városinak transzformációját gyakran a nyugati városok fejlődésével hasonlítja össze, emellett a régió speciális karaktervonásaira, fejlődési tendenciáira, örökségére is különös hangsúlyt fektet.
A kurzus ehhez a témához nyújt bevezetést és interdiszciplináris módszertant a hallgatók számára: a közép-európai városokban az elmúlt évtizedekben végbemenő társadalmi, gazdasági és politikai átalakulásokkal fogalkozik, a szociológia, a várostörténet, a kultúrakutás, valamint az építészet- és művészettörténet nézpontjáiból vizsgálva a dzsentrifikáció, a városi örökség, az átalakuló városi táj, a kultúra-alapú városfejlesztés, a városi mozgalmak és szerveződések, az informális városfejlődés, a különböző médiumú reprezentációk, valamint az új építészet és design, a városi térrel foglalkozó képzőművészet, kérdéseit.
A kurzus során a szövegek olvasása és közös elemzése mellett gazdag audio-vizuális anyagot (térképeket, terveket, filmeket, rádióadásokat és internetes oldalakat) is használunk, valamint kiállításokat és egyéb kapcsolódó eseményeket látogatunk meg. A kurzus munkáját kurzusblog és meghívott előadók segítik.
